(HealthDay) -When it's finally time to tidy up your coats and your winter boots, it's also the right time to rid your home of allergens that have accumulated during the summer. winter, suggests an allergist.
"If you're not someone who regularly undertakes spring cleanup work, consider doing it this year," said Dr. Todd Mahr, president of the American College of Allergies, of the University of Toronto. Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).
"Deep cleaning helps get rid of dust, mildew, pet dander and other allergens, which can make you miserable all winter. spring and autumn are the time when their seasonal allergies come in. can also cause chaos in the nasal pbadages and lungs and deep cleansing can help, "Mahr said in a press release. the ACAAI.
Animal dander, fur and saliva are some of the allergens that can accumulate in the winter. The best way to control them is to vacuum often and wash the upholstery, including your pet's bed. Never leave your pet in the bedroom.
Change your air filters every three months and choose one with a MERV rating of 11 or 12, Mahr advised. Fight dust mites by regularly vacuuming with a cyclone vacuum cleaner – which removes the soil from dust and dirt – or equipped with a HEPA filter (particulate air with high efficiency). Wash bedding and stuffed animals weekly.
Mold is another major indoor allergen commonly found in basements, bathrooms and kitchens. The reduction of moisture is the key to eliminating it. Use bathroom fans and always wipe away any stagnant water. Use detergent and water to remove visible mold from the surfaces, then dry the surfaces thoroughly. Keep the humidity in your home less than 60% and clean your gutters regularly to avoid leaks.
As tempting as this cool, warm outside air is, keep the windows of your house closed in the spring, suggested Mahr, because the breeze can bring pollen through the open windows. Keep the windows of your car closed too; use your air conditioning.
Mahr pointed out that allergy symptoms can appear before the arrival of spring. By starting to take your allergy medications two to three weeks before the onset of symptoms, you will avoid serious symptoms. If over-the-counter allergy medications do not help, talk to an allergist, he said.
