A 61-year-old Nebraska woman recently gave birth to her own granddaughter. Cecile Eledge has embarked on this special trip and her son and husband could have their own baby.

Eledge served as a gestational surrogate for his son, Matthew Eledge, and her husband, Elliot Dougherty, carrying their baby for nine months, according to a press release issued by the Nebraska Medical Center. "There was no moment of hesitation, it was a natural instinct." Cecile Eledge said.

The family went through a long process to determine if Eledge was a good candidate to replace the pregnancy. Her age was a factor to consider and she underwent several tests before the doctors told her that she could carry the embryo. Dougherty's sister donated the egg and Matthew Eledge donated this sperm.

On March 25, Eledge presented a gift to Uma Louise Dougherty-Eledge at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. The healthy girl weighed 5 pounds, 13 ounces.

"We are grateful for the operation of the whole process," said Matthew Eledge. "We are really thankful to Uma and her grandmother for being here, happy and healthy, for now, we will just relax and enjoy this moment."

Ramzy Nakad, MD, gave birth to Uma and several doctors from the fetal fetal medicine team of Nebraska Medicine saw Eledge arrive at birth. Dr. Nakad said that if his team of high-risk specialists saw many older patients, this birth was "certainly a very exceptional case".

"The entire team, from doctors to nurses to lab technicians, has shown a good balance between professionalism and compbadion," said Matthew Eledge.

The couple was in the room when Eledge gave birth and a photographer captured their emotional reactions. The new dads were moved to tears and beamed with joy as they met Uma for the first time beside the Eledge Hospital bed.

Thanks to a mother who dreamed of becoming a grandmother and two determined fathers, Uma grew up knowing that all her family did everything in her power to make her live in this world.
