A man dies after allegedly trying to escape from a police vehicle in motion

Police in the Ashanti region said it had opened an investigation into the death of an unidentified middle-aged man in Tafo Pankrono on Sunday, July 7, 2019.

Police said in a statement signed by ASP Godwin Ahianyo, a public affairs officer, that their preliminary investigation showed that a police patrol team had spotted a driver aboard a Toyota Pasco private sedan no registered, driving recklessly by turning other oncoming vehicles.

"The driver was asked to stop but ignored the police signals. He was therefore prosecuted and arrested, where a local police badistant was to escort him to the Tafo Pankrono police station, closely followed by the patrol team.

"Arriving at the crossroads of the government hospital of Tafo, the man got out of the vehicle. Trying to escape the police, he fell to the ground and became unconscious. The patrol team transported him to the Tafo government hospital, but was declared dead upon his arrival.

"By the time the police patrol team was about to leave the hospital, young people from the area stormed the OPD and physically badaulted some of the staff members of the squadron. the hospital before carrying the body of the deceased to Komfo Anokye University Hospital. Reinforcements were called and they managed to arrest Five (5) people, who are currently participating in the investigations, "the statement said.

Meanwhile, the police command said that he had taken the case in hand and badured the public that he would follow due process to conduct a thorough investigation.

"Everyone must remain calm because the result of the investigation will be made public," the statement said.
