A man in Ireland told doctors at a Dublin hospital that he had injected his own sperm in hopes of alleviating chronic back pain.

The Irish Times reports that this 33 year old man, whose name has not been revealed, has been injecting himself for a year and a half.

The man went to a Dublin hospital when he began to experience severe and sudden back pain, which he attributed to the lifting of an object in thick steel three days earlier.

The doctors discovered "an erythematous papule" on the man's right arm when he was examined.

Later, an X-ray showed that the man had also developed emphysema and edema – excess of aqueous fluid – under the skin.

The Irish Dr. Medical Journal has published the report of Dr. Lisa Dunne of Adelaide and Meath Hospital in Tallaght entitled "Semenly", a harmless back pain: an unusual presentation of a subcutaneous abscess.

Dr. Dunne wrote, "The patient revealed that he had intravenously injected his own sperm as an innovative method of treating back pain. He had conceived this "cure" independently of any medical advice. "

"After further interrogation on this alternative therapy, he revealed that he had injected a monthly" dose "of sperm for 18 consecutive months using a hypodermic needle purchased online."

"On this occasion, the patient had injected three" doses "of semen intravascularly and intramuscularly."

"He became indurated around the tiny entry sore where he had repeatedly failed to inject body fluid causing extravasation of sperm into the soft tissues."

"The patient's back pain improved during his stay in the hospital and he chose to free himself without incision or drainage from the local collection."

Dr. Dunne also noted that no other patient had injected sperm as medical treatment before, and used this case to prove that medical treatments require clinical trials before they are used.
