An Atlanta man is under arrest after police say he shot dead a man who knocked on the wrong door, mistaking her for his girlfriend's apartment.

Darryl Bynes, 32, was sentenced for murder at Fulton County Jail, according to Atlanta Police Sergeant John Chafee.

A little after midnight on Friday, police said the victim was knocking on a door he thought was his girlfriend's apartment. As the victim walked away from the door, Bynes, who was the resident of the apartment, approached his balcony and the two men started exchanging words. At one point, Bynes received a handgun and shot the victim, the police said.

The victim died on the scene after being shot in the back of the neck. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office has not confirmed the name of the victim yet.

The suspect remained on the scene and was arrested on the spot, said Chafee. We could not determine Sunday if Bynes had a lawyer.

Bynes' family told WSB, a CNN affiliate, that he was trying to protect his family and five children and that his truck had been stolen earlier last week.

The station also spoke to the family of the victim, who would be 19 years old.

"I have trouble understanding that someone can be so mean and hurt a child," said the victim's mother, Lisa Johnson, at WSB. "Stop and think before you pull the trigger."
