A memorial service was held in Israel on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 for the late Major-General Francis Vib-Sanziri, Chief of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

Major-General Vib-Sanziri was appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in October 2017 as head of the multinational force.

He has been Director General of the National Organization for Disaster Management from 2015 to 2017.

Major-General Vib-Sanziri, 62, died suddenly on Friday, April 19, 2019 in Eilat, Israel.

The solemn ceremony held at Ziouani camp was honored by Ghana's ambbadador to Israel, Hannah Ama Nyarko, and other ambbadadors from Nigeria, Zambia, Rwanda and Nepal. , among other diplomats.

In her remarks, Ms Nyarko, who represented the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, extolled the virtues that the late General explained in the performance of his duties.

In a message of condolence, President Akuffo Addo said that Ghana had lost "a dedicated and dedicated professional military officer who has served his country and the international community with distinction.

A 25-member delegation from the 85th Ghanaian Battalion, under the command of the Contingent Commander, Colonel John Lawluvi, and the Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Fiifi Deegbe, serving in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) took part at the ceremony that took place in Israel.

The body of the late General Francis Vib-Sanziri, draped under the flag of the United Nations, was given the last honors of the last message, followed by 2 minutes of silence.

A wreath-laying ceremony was also held during which the Ghanaian Ambbadador to Israel laid a wreath on behalf of the Government and the people of Ghana. Other key figures at the ceremony also laid wreaths for the deceased force commander.

Among the other dignitaries present at the commemorative ceremony, Major-General Cheryl Pearce, Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), a delegation of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), United Nations military and civilian officials, representatives of the Israel Defense Force and others mourning Israel and Syria.

A similar memorial service will be held on Friday, April 25, 2019 at Camp Faouar in the Syrian Arab Republic. The body of the late general must arrive in Ghana on Saturday, April 27, 2019 for new funeral rites.
