This is a problem that has been troubling circulars for years, but now, the innovative proposal of a company might have changed things for those sitting in the center.
Colorado-based start-up Molon Labe Seating's new headquarters design includes three standard economy seats in a staggered layout
The middle seat has been adjusted to fit slightly behind the aisle seats and lower than the floor.
The company says that by moving the center seat a few inches back, it will create a space three to five inches wider than the standard 18-inch seat.
Hank Scott, founder and CEO of Molon Labe Seating, told CNN: "This little bit of failure means that every person has the opportunity to disperse a little more.
"No seat is smaller, a seat ends up being wider, and we have solved the war of the elbows."
The armrests are constructed to allow pbadengers to drive the aisles and windows to rest their elbows on the front of the armrest while leaving a space at the rear, lower, for the middle pbadenger.
The S1 model is designed for short domestic flights, but the company is developing a version suitable for long-haul flights that would be suitable for more padding and larger TV screens.

The seats were certified by the Federal Aviation Administration last month and are being manufactured by Primus Aerospace in Colorado.
It should be available on two airlines in April or May of next year.
Mr Scott said that he could not reveal the name of the airline, but that one of them is based in North America.
He added that the seats are also lighter than standard seats, which would be obvious to help airlines reduce their fuel costs.
But he said the seats would not solve the whole problem of theft. It does not bend or offer a little legroom.
He added, "It's always going to go shit, now it's going to shit less."
