Daniel James aspires to be like the big Ryan Giggs of Manchester United, whose advice, conviction and support help the Welsh winger, who has no qualms about joining the club.
Only seventeen months after his senior team debut for Swansea, the remarkable progress of the 21-year-old shows no signs of slowing down – despite some noticeable shocks along the way.
Seeing a move to Leeds collapsing early in the year was one of those setbacks, but that meant James would become Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first rookie as United's manager in a deal of up to around 18 million from £.
The winger also became a Welsh international during this period and could hardly ask for a better mentor than the international manager Giggs, who knows the success of Old Trafford well.
"Giggsy, as soon as I entered Wales, had ambitions for me," said James.
"The way it has brought me, as well as a lot of other young people, has been amazing.
"He spoke to me when I signed for the first time at United. His advice was to be myself, that's what I will try to do.
"He was not a bad player, was he? What he did to Manchester United was incredible.
"Every young winger admires a person like him.
"He was playing in the Premier League until the age of 40 and still beat the players.
"The credit comes back to him from the way he cares for his body.
"It's amazing for me, when I go abroad, to learn from people like him. This is obviously something that I aspire to be. "
It will be difficult to get close to the impact of Giggs, but James has really started United's life on and off the pitch.
The 21-year-old impressed in pre-season practice and spent more time than his teammates signing autographs and posing for selfies on Thursday when 12,000 fans came to follow WACA training.
Two days and 50.206 were present as James made his first appearance for the club during a 2-0 win against Perth Glory at the gigantic stage Optus, where he was the best performer in the first period.
"Walking there, with the number of fans coming from all over, is surreal, really," said James. "Playing with these players is a dream come true.
"I do not think that (signing all these autographs on Thursday) will eventually sink, really.
"Going out at Old Trafford is the big one. It is at that moment that he will probably sink.
"But the number of fans coming to training shows the support of this club. The number of fans who came out tonight from everywhere is amazing. "
James has barely stopped smiling since joining the group – a contrast to the negativity that surrounds the club after a mediocre season and a lack of summer activities.
When asked if this negativity had preoccupied him before deciding to join him, James replied, "Not at all." When a club like Manchester United calls you, you can not say no.
"As soon as they did it, I did not think I was there. Today, the support was absolutely incredible. I am so happy to be here.
