It is therefore not surprising that before the celebration of World Environment Day this year, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment , Professor David Boyd, called on states to take urgent action to improve the quality of air in order to: their human rights obligations.
According to the UN expert, the right to a healthy environment is fundamental to human well-being and legally recognized by more than 150 nation-states at the national and general levels. The need to ensure the enjoyment of these rights by all around the world, while respecting the principles of universal human rights and non-discrimination, must be reaffirmed at the global level.
