Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson revealed that the government is reassessing laws and policies regulating the sector.
During a press briefing on Sunday, the minister noted that a new fisheries law is being drafted to replace the current law.
According to her, a new national fisheries management plan is also underway since the previous one expired in 2019.
In addition, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy, which was developed in 2008, will be revised.
These reviews, she explained, “aim to ensure that the management of fishery resources responds to emerging trends in fisheries management and international best practices.”
While acknowledging that the fishing industry is riddled with many problems, Ms Koomson called on stakeholders, including the media, fishermen and citizens, to help the ministry tackle illegal fishing.
According to her, this is the only way to save the country’s shores for the next generation.
She further revealed that the government is acquiring four boats to help security agencies protect marine life.
She also added that security personnel will drive away fishermen who aim to illegally exploit the country’s marine waters.
“The four patrollers will be deployed in each of the four coastal regions; central regions, Greater Accra, Volta and the West, for frequent inspections at sea, at sea and for a rapid response to the detection of infringements in VMS centers ”, explained the Minister.
