‘A new striker would be the icing on the cake for Man City’ – Richards calls for Aguero’s cover to be recovered

Manchester City are already title favorites in the eyes of Micah Richards, but the former Blues defender says a new striker signing in January would be “the icing on the cake” for Pep Guardiola.

There’s already a lot of firepower on the books at Etihad Stadium, with a lot of money invested in established performers.

All-time top scorer Sergio Aguero, however, continues to suffer from fitness issues, while Gabriel Jesus has only managed one goal in his last 11 appearances.

Others are helping to carry the load, with rejuvenated center-half John Stones scoring a brace in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, but Guardiola will be eager to rediscover an offensive spark.

City quietly made their way to second in the Premier League table, with the Blues bragging about an ongoing fixture against Manchester United, when he was only two points off pace.

Richards believes a third title in the space of four years could be heading to the Etihad, especially if Guardiola can free up more funds in the current window to land another leader.

“Man United are in pole position, so it’s up to them to lose!” Richards joked about Sky Sports after City’s complete victory over Palace.

“City, I have supported them since the start of the season, just because of the size of their team.

“I know they win games, but just when you want to break a team later like Liverpool, United or Chelsea, I think they need a striker, just to put the icing on the cake.

“And if they have a striker in January, I will still say Manchester City.

“I supported them at the start of the season but when you lose a player like Aguero … like Liverpool did well without Van Dijk and Gomez too, so I will always shout at them too.

“I still think it’s between Man City and Liverpool, really. I just think there is a bit more quality in the teams.

City, who have already booked a spot for the Carabao Cup final, will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Aston Villa – which has seen a Covid-19 outbreak preventing them from taking part in the Premier League competition since new Year’s Day.
