TThe measles outbreak that is spreading in the US arrived in Michigan last month after a man left New York to raise money for a charity, health officials said. .
This unnamed man, who raised money from the ultra-orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn, drove all night to Detroit.
He felt bad on the way and consulted a doctor on his arrival, but this one, who had never seen measles, misdiagnosed the man's fever and coughing like bronchitis.
Since the man arrived in Michigan on March 13, 39 cases have been confirmed in that state – Michigan is fifth, after New York, New Jersey, California, and Washington – to have confirmed a measles outbreak . An outbreak is defined as three or more cases.
"Each of our cases had a connection with the original case," said Leigh-Anne Stafford, Oakland County Health Officer, a suburb of Detroit where all but one case has been reported.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that the number of measles cases in the world has increased by 300% over the last year.
