OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso – A spokesman for the Burkinabe government said six people, including a pastor, had been killed during an attack on a Christian church in the north of the country.
The violence took place Sunday in the village of Silgadji, not far from the unstable border with Mali.
Urban Kabore, director of communication for the Sahel region of Burkina Faso, said Monday that the six people were killed after the Sunday services.
There has been no immediate demand for accountability, although violent Islamist extremism has increasingly destabilized the country. A number of jihadist groups are known to exploit the area.
Authorities said that during a separate incident in eastern Burkina Faso, five teachers were shot dead on Friday.
Islamic extremists also targeted foreigners, kidnapping and killing a Canadian geologist earlier this year.
