A recent auction of Sotheby's has exceeded all expectations: a 17,000-bottle collection covering nearly five decades has sold for nearly $ 4 million more than its estimated selling price.
According to a recent Bloomberg report, the collection sold for $ 29.8 million last weekend at the Tran-scend-ent Wines auction. The estimates that led to the auction put the expected price of the collection at about $ 26 million. The auction was held in Hong Kong; China is quickly becoming one of the most important wine markets in the world.
The sale set a new record for the highest private wine collection ever auctioned, surpbading the record held by billionaire Bill Koch's collection. Koch's 20,000-bottle collection is sold for nearly $ 22 million at an auction in New York City in 2016.
This latest Sotheby's wine sale joins the ranks of other high-stakes wine sales, in which individual crates sold for up to $ 363,000.

This rare collection included "grands crus" – or first clbad – burgundy and bordeaux belonging to an anonymous owner. According to Bloomberg, Sotheby's still has not revealed the seller, although he has been described as a "fifth generation real estate developer".
Last year, several alcohol sales were smashed, including a single bottle of Macallan, a 60-year-old sold for $ 1.1 million at auction. The sale set the record for the most expensive bottle of whiskey ever sold, but was overtaken a month later by another bottle of Macallan, sold for $ 1.5 million.
