The locals were baffled by a "ridiculous" trail measuring only 16 inches wide.
The footbridge – just wide enough to set foot on it – has also been described as Britain's "most useless trail".
The trail is one of two tracks that have been positioned on both sides of a road in the Walton Gate development in Felixstowe, Suffolk.
Ken Knights, a resident of the area, said there was "no safe way to leave your home unless you drive".
Elvita Branch added: "This is the most useless route in Britain.
"The paths are reserved for one person, it is impossible for two people to walk on them or for a mother to push her pram."
A photo of the path was posted on the Facebook page of FelixstoweNews with the hashtag #pathgate and the question: "When is a path not a path?"

Tessa Aston wrote: "Ridiculous! Really good for pedestrians – maybe it's a tightrope-driven workout !?"
Angela Ashford also wrote: "This is not a path at all, it's a wide sidewalk ….. dangerous for all users … once the hedge has grown, it will be nonexistent … rather pathetic. "
And Lynn Morrissey described it as "ridiculous, no brain."
Promoter Barratt Homes, developer, said the tapes were not designed to be bridges, but to house public services.
The company said most roads on Walton Gate's development, consisting of 190 properties, included pedestrian trails.

A spokesperson said: "Service margins are being set up for shared-surface roads, where trails are not required according to the Suffolk Design Guide for Residential Areas.
"We have designed and constructed the roads at Walton Gate in accordance with the Suffolk Highways Estate road specifications and have been verified and approved by Suffolk Highways, which will adopt the road network once development is complete."
