A routine eye exam ends with a 7-year-old girl unable to walk or eat properly

A regular appointment at opticians is complete with a girl who has undergone surgery that has changed her life and made her unable to walk or eat properly.

When Brooke Gibb went to Burrows Opticians In Normanton, West Yorkshire, last May, she was expecting a brief routine eye exam.

However, when the optician has noticed a swelling

in the back of his eye, they told the parents of the seven-year-old girl to take her to the hospital.

Doctors at the Royal Derby Hospital discovered a tumor in the back of Brooke's brain during an MRI and decided to act immediately.

She was transferred to Queen's Medical Center in Nottingham and underwent a large-scale operation to suppress this growth.

The girl, who has eight siblings, spent nine weeks in the hospital, exhausting, only for doctors to tell her that the tumor was cancerous and that she was unable to walk.

Mckenzie Gibb, Brooke's mother, told Derbyshire Live that the diagnosis was "terrible".

She said, "It's so difficult for us and difficult for Brooke, but despite what has happened, she continues to smile and she remains happy.

"But we are optimistic and she too, but that did not stop her from being a normal seven-year-old girl, which is great.

"We just hope that she will be fine at the end of it all. She is so strong and we are so proud of what she has lived.

"It is also important to point out that, had there been no routine check, it could have been a lot worse and we would never have known."

After the operation, Brooke began chemotherapy for a period of one year and received three blood transfusions.

The girl also suffers from Post-Fossa Syndrome, a condition that makes speaking and walking very difficult.

While losing her hair and being force-fed through a tube in the stomach, Ms. Gibb said the changes in Brooke's life "do not put her in phase".

In May, the family will know if intensive chemotherapy treatment has been successful.

Since the operation, Mrs. Gibb and her father Thomas have been relentlessly raising funds to buy a wheelchair for Brooke and her one year old brother.
