The former vice president of the Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (Association of Commonwealth Pharmacists) calls for a conscious effort to change misconceptions about women's empowerment by focusing on gender stereotypes .
Frances Thelma Owusu-Daaku, professor, said at a symposium celebrating the International Year of Periodic Clbadification in Kumasi that several interventions over the years had had only little impact. .
"If you want to empower women, you must first look at your preconceptions and misconceptions, which is also true for women," she said.
Professor Owusu-Daaku added, "I've heard a lot of people say that women are their own enemies and I do not believe in that. It's something that society has put in our heads and we have to get rid of it. "
She dispelled the idea that empowering women would lead to a disadvantaged man.
"Emancipation of women does not mean competition, but it is possible to have both men and women empowered," she noted.
The symposium was organized by the Women in Science Engineering Technology and Mathematics Ghana (WISTEM GH) program.
It was in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry of the University of Science and Technology Kwame Nkrumah (KNUST).
The participants in the events were selected in the primary and secondary schools of Kumasi, capital of the Ashanti region.
