A teenager suspected of attempted murder was arrested Sunday after a 6-year-old boy was thrown from the 10th floor observation deck of the Tate Modern art gallery in London, announced the police.

A witness told the Daily Mirror: "I heard the impact, and then shouted from the top when a woman shouted," This is my son! It's my son! ".

"I went inside because the screams were horrible, the boy did not make any noise but the people from the observation deck were screaming."

The popular gallery was then locked, as visitors could not enter or exit.

Metropolitan police said police and paramedics found the injured child on the roof of the Tate's fifth floor. He was taken by air ambulance to a local hospital, where he was reported to be in critical condition, police said in a statement.

"A 17-year-old man had stayed with members of the public on the 10th floor observation deck," the statement said. "There is no reason to think that he is known to the victim."

The outdoor viewing area and rooftop bar are at the top of the Tate Modern, the British National Gallery of International Modern Art. Visitors to the open terrace enjoy a panoramic view of the British capital.

The gallery's website boasts "stunning 360-degree views of the London skyline from the top of the Thames".

Located on the south side of the Thames, the gallery was the UK's most popular tourist attraction in 2018, with 5.9 million hits, according to the Association's major tourist attractions.
