One student died after eating pasta left over from his kitchen table for five days.
The 20-year-old girl became ill after eating spaghetti leftovers in tomato sauce prepared five days earlier and stored at room temperature.
After falling ill, he went to bed trying to put the disease to sleep and was found dead in bed the next morning by his devastated parents.
An autopsy later revealed that he had died suddenly of food poisoning caused by a bacterium called Bacillus cereus.
According to the Food Standards Authority, Bacillus cereus is a spore-forming bacterium that produces toxins and causes vomiting and diarrhea.
Although the student – known as AJ – presented both of these symptoms, he treated her as a regular food poisoning, drinking plenty of water and taking no medication.
However, the toxins of the bacteria caused the failure of his liver, killing him while he was sleeping.
His lifeless body was discovered 11 hours later by his worried "worried parents" because he had not stood up for the university.
The shocking story was presented by Dr. Bernard, a licensed practitioner who studies and shares strange medical cases found around the world on his YouTube channel.
Dr. Bernard badyzed the case, which originally appeared in the US Journal of Clinical Microbiology, explaining the harmful bacteria that caused the arrest of the AJ liver.
Samples of spoiled pasta and tomato sauce were also badyzed. The National Reference Laboratory for Foodborne Epidemics confirmed that spaghetti was contaminated with "significant amounts" of B. c.
"AJ is a healthy 20-year-old man," he explains in the video, adding that the story was not a "typical" case of food poisoning.
"A lot of people eat pasta, or any other form of noodle, that stays a day or two and they're fine," he said.
"Watch out for food left over for more than a few hours, and if food smells funny, it's always better to be safe than sorry."
Since the video was shared last week, she has received hundreds of comments from shocked viewers.
"It was a bit silly but it's not really something you hope to kill yourself a day later," wrote one person on Reddit.
"I do not know why someone would leave perishable food in the kitchen for 5 days and think it's okay to eat them," added another.
