Liverpool looks Memphis Depay – four years after missing the Dutch winger when he joined Manchester United.
Depay, which is now valued at £ 50 million, is considering leaving the French club Lyon for another chance in one of the major leagues in Europe.
And he returns to the radar of Anfield, following the interest of Real Madrid for Sadio Mane.
Depay looked to Merseyside in 2015 – only Louis van Gaal sanctioned a bid of £ 30m, which saw the 25-year-old leave PSV Eindhoven for United.
Liverpool has no intention of selling the talismanic Mane in Madrid.
But they are determined to have a substitute in the frame if Mane tries to force the shot. They regularly watch Depay this season, club and country.
He has scored six goals in his last eight appearances with Holland and the Dutch boss, Ronald Koeman, believes that he is now ready to evolve into a bigger club.
Koeman said, "Memphis is dangerous in the box. It creates goals and scores a lot of goals.
"It was vital for Holland and helped us to reach the final stage of the League of Nations in June."
Klopp explains how Henderson is positioning himself to become the "new Gerrard"
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is also trying to replace Steven Gerrard.
Klopp summed up the task perfectly, describing it as "the most difficult job in 500 years of football". No wonder, then, that the Liverpool boss praised the current skipper of the club, Jordan Henderson, after leaving the bench to win a 3-1 win at Southampton.
The 27-year-old English midfielder appeared to be a man possessed while producing a Stevie G-like cameo.
Henderson was everywhere in St Mary's – striker and bringing the Merseysiders back to the top of the table. He even scored his first goal in the league since September 2017.
Then Klopp's deep admiration for the often-maligned playmaker knew no bounds.
With Liverpool's two-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the restored Premier League, the German said, "I've seen that a lot. It's Jordan, it's him.
"Hendo, from my point of view, is a brilliant player. He is our skipper, he is a fantastic character. If I had to write a book on Hendo, it would be 500 pages. So I am very positive. It's like that. "
Much of this respect stems from Henderson's handling of Gerrard's pressure.
Klopp said: "The most difficult job of the last 500 years of football has been to replace Gerrard. In people's minds, it was like, "If it's not Stevie, it's not good enough."
"And Jordan handled that very well, so he can be really proud.
"He is a very, very important part of our team."
In the title battle at Liverpool, there will be a home showdown against Chelsea next week.
And the perfect opportunity for Henderson to gain some exchange on Merseyside.
Five years ago, he was suspended for the vital visit of the Blues. The afternoon ended in a 2-0 defeat for Brendan Rodgers in Liverpool – thanks to Gerrard's infamous slip – and killed his title dreams at the same time.
Judging by the explosive way in which he celebrated his goal against the Saints, Henderson is determined to be forgiven.
