A teacher warns of a rare condition after her sister has had an epileptic seizure when she's brushed her hair – The Sun

A TEACHER reports a rare condition that can trigger seizures in children – just brush your hair.

Alicia Renee Phillips says she was helping her 10-year-old sister Gracie prepare for herself last Sunday, when she suddenly collapsed.

The 32-year-old woman took her to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with an unusual illness called hairstyle syncope.

This only affects children and is thought to occur when the vasovagal nerve of the head is stimulated by pulling on the hair.

This can cause a drop in blood pressure and a slow heart rate, resulting in loss of consciousness.

Fortunately for Gracie, all her tests came back and she did not need treatment after her collapse on July 7th.

Alicia, of Clinton, Tenn., Decided to share her experience to warn others of "one of the scariest moments of her life".

Writing on Facebook, she said, "This morning, I was curling my little sister Gracie's hair for the church.

"I was maybe doing about five minutes and she starts to wring a little bit and looks a little pale.I asked her if she was going to get sick and she shook her head . "

"I'm taking my little girls out of the bathroom and starting to restrain her hair for her while she's leaning over the restroom.

"30 seconds later … she looks at me, she is extremely pale, with blue lips, and begins to faint, her pupils have become really big and I have caught her."

Alicia said that she had started screaming for her husband Dale, 36, while her little sister was unconscious.

"Gracie has a blank stare and looks at her face and is completely insensitive and lame for about a minute," she continued.

"Her hands were shaking too, very much like a fit, she then comes back and says she feels much better.

"She says that she remembers hearing us talk but that she could not see us, I was crying, she was very confused."

Alicia, a math teacher, then explained that the family had taken Gracie to the nearest hospital, where the medical staff had performed a number of tests, which was clear.

But a specialist told them that Gracie had a hairdressing syncope, which allowed doctors to see up to five cases a year, mostly girls.

She continued, "It turns out that something called syncope of hair grooming affects kids from 5 to 13 years old.

"They said they see about 1 to 5 cases a year.

"It turns out that brushing, curling, braiding or drying can cause nerve stimulation of the scalp and cause some children to experience similar symptoms."

Speaking of the strange diagnosis, Alicia said, "I had to look at him like he had four heads.

"I had never heard of anything like this before – but he badured us that it was real."

The doctors advised Gracie to "sit down and take a break" if she feels nauseous or if she has light-headedness while she is having her hair done.

Alicia added, "We have to be very careful every time that she does her hair, but she must always brush her hair, she can not walk around with a bird's nest on her head!"

Alicia warns her friends on Facebook: "If a child complains of having a stomachache or feeling dizzy while he is combing, make sure he sits and watch for him." near!"

Alicia, who has three children – Harper, four, Henley, three, and Anthony, one – said that although the incident frightened her, her sister was doing well.

"I do not feel so stupid now, knowing that this has happened to other people," she added.

"But she's fine and now I know that there is no underlying problem at the root of this problem."
