Bangkok:

A Thai high school student who has fallen into a coma after the deaths of his comrades who died on Thursday, police said, who had alerted about the hazing culture in the country's schools.

The rituals collectively called SOTUS – seniority, order, tradition, unity, spirit – are commonplace in universities, vocational schools, high schools and even military schools.

They see younger students submit to mental or physical tests established by the upper clbades, such as carrying on seniors' affairs, but can sometimes cause serious injury and, in extreme cases, death.

The most recent fatal case was alleged against a 15-year-old boy from Nakhon Pathom province last month by three of his elders who allegedly kicked him in the chest that he fell into a coma.

Police confirmed that the boy died on Thursday and said the three older people – who have already been charged with badault – would face more serious charges.

Lieutenant-Colonel Pinyo Musiksan told AFP that the charges would include "the intention to kill".

Two of the elders will be tried by a juvenile court because they are under 18 years old. They are all released on bail.

An anti-hazing group has recorded an average of 250 hazing cases in Thai educational institutions each year, with only the most horrible cases having come to light.

It is also a problem that afflicts the Thai armed forces, young recruits reportedly beaten and abused by their superiors at the military academy.

In 2017, the death of an 18-year-old army cadet drew national attention when his family discovered that their son's organs had been harvested.

The army was released from any wrongdoing, keeping to the initial explanation that the freshman had died from heart failure. .
