Ugandan police arrested by pop star turned MP Bobi Wine on Monday just two days after the lifting of the house arrest of one of the candidates to the defender of veteran president Yoweri Museveni, one of his lawyers and a spokesman for the police.
Wine, at age 37, is the figurehead of a new generation who grew up under Museveni but wants to see a change and his anti-government songs have allowed him to make himself known.
Police arrested him after he was summoned by the Criminal Investigations Branch on Monday morning, said one of his lawyers, Asuman Basalirwa.
"This time, we have not been informed of the reason for his detention," he added.
Wine entered Parliament in 2017. One of his songs contains the lyric text "Freedom Fighters Become Dictators", while others suggest that Museveni stayed in power too long.
The 74-year-old leader has been leading Uganda since he came to power as head of a rebel army in 1986, but plans to run for a sixth term.
The wine was held in a police station 30 kilometers east of the capital Kampala, said his lawyer Basalirwa.
Police spokesman Fred Enanga confirmed the arrest.
"He is with the police and investigations are ongoing," he told AFP.
The police withdrew from Wine's residence Saturday, he added. "Until this morning, he was a free man."
From Tuesday to Saturday last week, Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, was found under house arrest at his home in Kampala, while police officers had blocked him while he was trying to go to a concert in his nightclub.
Last week, police spokesman Enanga described the situation as a "preventive arrest" imposed when authorities decide that someone is about to commit a crime.
The cancellation by the authorities of one of his performances last week led to clashes between opposition supporters and police armed with batons, who also fired tear gas.
On several occasions in recent months, the authorities have prevented Wine from giving concerts. His house arrest last week was part of his efforts to keep him out of the wings.
