MADRID (Reuters) – A computer virus has infected the intranet of the Spanish Ministry of Defense this month with the aim of stealing high-tech military secrets, El País newspaper reported on Tuesday, quoting sources as saying. Investigation suspecting a foreign power behind the cyberattack.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense said the ministry would not comment.
El País said the virus was apparently e-mailed and detected for the first time in early March. However, he could have remained undetectable for months in an intranet with over 50,000 users.
Although the network does not contain clbadified information, the newspaper indicates that its sources were concerned about a wider infection affecting other networks in order to access information related to military technology secret.
The investigation had not yet determined who was responsible for the cyber attack, but sources told El País that it was too technically complex to be carried out by conventional hackers. "There is a state behind that," they said.
