EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – This is Conbad Heart Disease Awareness Week when a mother wants you to think about your heart and that of your child.
Since her son was diagnosed with a heart condition, Silvia Martinez, a mother of El Paso, participated in a social media campaign: 1 in 100 people are born with coronary artery disease.
Martinez believes that conbad heart defects are the most common type of conbad malformations. Some people go through life without realizing that they are born with one.
Martinez said that she did not think that her son's breath, Alexander Quinonez, was a sign.
A dentist who wanted to do dental work on Alexander four years ago asked for a doctor's permission when Martinez mentioned the mumur.
During the examination, a cardiologist told them the news. Alexander needed a surgery right away. Martinez is grateful that the discovery was made when it was and not when it would be too late.
"We would have discovered that he was running to school or doing something very deserving, he could have collapsed," Martinez said.
Alexander goes to see a cardiologist for the rest of his life.
The treatment depends on the type of defect and, even if the heart is repaired, many people are not cured.
Conbad Heart Disease Awareness Week begins on February 7th and ends on Valentine's Day each year.
The signs and symptoms of conbad heart disease depend on the type and severity of the defect. Some have no signs or symptoms. Others can cause some of the following symptoms:
- Nails or blue lips
- Breathing quickly or disturbed
- Fatigue while eating
- Feel like sleeping
