A vote in Article 50 may mean a Brexit delay: live updates

Prime Minister Theresa May faces calls to regain control of his party after Conservative ministers and Cabinet members challenged him in Wednesday night's vote.

"His authority has been openly challenged by ministers and other ministers," Nigel Evans, a Brexiteer curator, told the UK Press Association, referring to May's attempt to complain about her own motion.

A government source told CNN that once the Spelman amendment – rejecting a Brexit without agreement at any time and under any circumstances – had been pbaded, the May motion was unacceptable because it directly contradicted the government policy. And when May tried to bad her ministers for her vote against her own motion, she lost the game.

"It must reaffirm its authority, we must have a collective responsibility within the government, otherwise it simply does not work," said Evans.

Another former Conservative minister, George Freeman, suggested in an article on Twitter that May should propose to resign in order to get help for her project.
