A 10-year-old boy died in a Western Australian hospital suspected of influenza.
A spokeswoman for Perth Children's Hospital confirmed the death of the boy but did not say whether his critical condition in recent days was related to the flu.
It is understood that the boy has suffered complications from the virus.
The case brings to 11 the number of flu-related deaths this year in the state of Washington, compared to four at the same time last year.
The latest weekly data on reportable diseases in the state's Department of Health indicate that the number of cases reported in the state this year jumped from 874 in a week to 3887.
This compares to 1216 cases for the same period last year.
The department says the flu season has arrived eight weeks earlier than usual and is encouraging people to get vaccinated.
