PIGEON FORGE, Tennessee (WZTV) – A woman has contracted a serious infection at a Pigeon Forge spa and almost lost her leg, RTV6 reported.
Taylor Bryant visited Pigeon Forge during the spring break and used a hot tub almost every night during his vacation. She began to feel sick only a few days after returning home, the media reported.
Bryant ended up in the hospital while his symptoms worsened. Doctors believe that she contracted Pseudomonas folliculitis, reported RTV6. Bryant was exposed to antibiotics for 10 days, but during this time she could not walk and had to use a wheelchair to move around.
According to the Mayo Clinic, folliculitis is a common skin condition in which hair follicles ignite. At first glance, it may look like small red bumps or white pimples. Severe infections can cause permanent hair loss and scarring, according to the Mayo Clinic.
The CDC calls this "rash in the spa" and is caused by invisible bacteria. The CDC provides the following tips to prevent the spa from erupting:
- Ask the pool manager about the disinfection and pH testing program for your spa
- Ensure frequent testing, control of disinfectant levels (usually chlorine or bromine) and pH control.
- Remove swimsuits and shower after swimming.
- Clean swimsuits after swimming.
