A newlywed couple in Kuwait recently went into history to have the shortest marriage of its existence. They decided to separate just three minutes after their wedding.
Last month, the Kuwaiti media reported the strange case of a couple who ended their marriage even before leaving the court where they got married.
The two women had just signed their marriage contract before a judge and were leaving the courthouse when the bride stumbled by accident. Instead of helping him get up, the groom would have insulted his wife by calling her "stupid" for slipping.
It was apparently too much for the woman, so she went back and asked the judge to dissolve their marriage on the spot. They had only been married for three minutes.
According to Q8 News, it was the fastest divorce in the history of Kuwait and probably the whole world. We have already seen similar cases, such as this Dubai couple who divorced 15 minutes after his marriage, but three minutes? It will be hard to beat.
The announcement, which broke all records, went viral on Twitter last week, with most commentators joking and ridiculing the couple for wasting the judge's time.
Some, however, sided with the bride saying that she had made the right choice. If the groom insulted him so early in their marriage, who knows what he would have done later on, a person wrote.
"If that's how it works from the beginning, it's best to leave," commented a Twitter user.
"A marriage without the respect, is a failure from the beginning, "added another.
Some thought that the bride was simply seeking an excuse for a quick divorce, which is not so unrealistic given Kuwait's problem with "interest-based marriages".
According to this article in the Arab Times, loans and financial badistance provided by the state to newly married couples have exploded the divorce rate in the Middle East country in recent years.
Many young people focus only on the benefits of the state and then seek a quick divorce. This is obviously not the only cause of divorce reported in Kuwait, but it is certainly one of the most disturbing.
