Dental administrator Kat Neubrand never had skin problems during her teenage years or her 20s, but after turning 30, she began to burst.
The 30-year-old from San Jose, California, USA, developed a painful cystic acne that was reported more frequently and, over time, became larger and more inflamed.
Kat's skin problem left her feeling depressed, alone and wondering why it was happening to her because she thought she was too old for acne.
She hid behind heavy makeup and photo editing applications like Facetune when she posted pictures online.
But now she has decided to kiss her natural face and avoid filters on Instagram to avoid "sinners" and promote skin positivity.
"At first, I felt very depressed," she said. I wondered why this was happening to me? Is not it too old for acne? I also felt really alone because none of my friends or family had or did not have cystic acne.
'I decided that I had to stop hiding behind filters and Facetune and share my real face and story on Instagram.
"My acne became so bad that I was no longer able to hide it and I did not want to continue editing my photos. I felt like a catfish on social media and decided that it was enough.
"It was terrifying, but I received such support that I knew it was the right thing to do.
"Since then I have been publishing unpublished photos and sharing my acne, depression and anxiety problems in hopes of being able to help another person struggling with these problems."
Kat can not say why the illness started so late, but since she removed her contraceptive, some of her acne has disappeared.
She also has a gentle skin care routine that she uses to cleanse and moisturize her skin and she takes spironolactone.
She now hopes that others will learn to put aside all the different make-up products and the range of filters available.
"You do not need filters and photoshop to be beautiful," she added.
"It's not realistic, it's all we see on TV and in magazines. We must stop pursuing unrealistic ideals of beauty just because society thinks we know what is supposed to be beautiful
"Filters and photoshop only create more insecurities for us. They make us hide behind a mask because we do not think we are in the mold of the beauty of society.
"Different is beautiful, your imperfections make you beautiful.
What is cystic acne and how is it treated?
Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at one time. It causes spots, oily skin and sometimes skin that is hot or painful to the touch.
Cystic acne is the most serious type. It develops when cysts form deep under your skin. This can result from a combination of bacteria, oil and dry skin cells that get trapped in your pores.
Cysts are large pieces filled with pus that look like boils and are most likely to cause permanent scarring.
The cause of the cysts is unclear, but it is related to androgen, a male hormone. Some women use birth control to manage acne by regulating their hormones.
The hormones in combination contraceptive pills can help reduce acne. The pills decrease the circulation of androgens, which decreases the production of sebum (the oil, which makes the acne more noticeable).
If you are worried about your skin, contact a dermatologist.
