Aayalolo bounces today in "limited" operations

The Greater Accra Pbadenger Transport Authority (GAPTE), responsible for the much-criticized Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) known as Aayalolo, will resume operations today, Monday, June 10, 2019.

The company announced that it will "operate a limited morning and evening service between Amasaman and Tudu, from Ofankor to Tudu, from Pokuase to Tudu and from Achimota to Tudu.

In October 2018, the operation of the bus service of Aayalolo stopped due to financial difficulties and what the managers then called technical problems.

After six months, there was a partial resumption of operations in Kasoa; a deviation of the Achimota section of Tudu, where one kilometer of this section has been designated for their services.

By 2018, more than 150 Aayalolo buses had been stranded at the Achimota bus terminal in Accra, while another 60 were deployed to Kumasi for use to be put into service.

The GAPTE reportedly asked for a bailout from the government to help pay for fuel costs, salaries and other operational costs, but the Ministry of Transportation rejected the request.

Bus ridership was quite high at the start of operations in 2016, but began to decline six months later, from 12,000 planned pbadengers to 9,000 pbadengers per day.

Daily patronage ranged from 9,000 to 10,000 people in the corridor of the Central Business District Amasaman-Ofankor-Achimota-Accra.

In addition to the low attendance rate, Aayololo bus drivers have embarked on a series of strikes against unpaid wages.
