Abena Korkor Addo and the problematic problem of mental health in Ghana ▷ Ghana news

[ad_1]

Whether or not Ghanaians take the issue of mental health seriously depends on people like Abena Korkor Addo, who are named ambbadadors of the issue and its social consequences.

The World Health Organization of the United Nations (UN-WHO) believes that it is impossible to define a healthy person without worrying about his mental or psychological health. This aspect of a healthy person is not popular with Ghanaians.

Why do not we think about the mental health of our people? It may be because when you come from a generally poor society, bread and butter matter more than the voices in your head.

During a television show in the United States in April 2019, a South African girl interacting with Oprah Winfrey said "that she is African and that she can not be mentally depressed" .

The challenge of educating our people about mental health requires effective public relations. People must be convinced that there is no need to be naked on the streets to be considered "crazy".

And that's where people like Abena Korkor Addo come in.

Since his infamous, semi-bad and steamy videos became viral on social media in 2014, Addo has managed to transform itself into a de facto face of mental health in Ghana.

Experts from the Accra Psychiatric Hospital diagnosed her with bipolar disorder. To her credit, she has partnered with stakeholders to raise awareness about mental health.

Unfortunately, branding and public relations work so that when you become the face of a sensitive issue, people expect you to be "above sin". When you can not do that, people find your leadership role problematic.

Ghanaians have become accustomed to Addo to plug and unplug their sanity, so to speak. We do not know if she is using her personal capacity or her illness every time a video is broadcast.

But that's where the problem lies. The fear here is that the Ghanaians have seen so many addo videos of Addo that we have detached from the arguments that her role as ambbadador seeks to promote.

Are we in danger of carrying our moral judgments on a poor young woman and therefore forget the lessons we can learn from her?

The struggle to educate our people about mental health is about what people see and hear. These are public relations and public debate.

YEN.com.gh do not ask that Addo be kept out of the public because it might defeat his good work. We do not ask that she does not live her life fully.

We ask friends, family and friends around to understand that we need someone in whom the Ghanaian public can trust.

We do not need a perfect Abena Korkor Addo. We need a credible Abena Korkor Addo, and all must be on the bridge to make sure it succeeds, because it has consequences for us all.
