According to the Daily Guide, a source close to the Abesim murder investigation revealed the status of an investigation into the arrest of a 28-year-old man who allegedly murdered at least two people and kept their bodies dismembered in his refrigerator.
According to the source, Richard Appiah since his arrest and detention in custody has insisted on being served with fried rice with chicken only.
Appiah was arrested in August this year after human parts stored in his refrigerator were discovered by police at his residence in Alaska, a suburb of Abesim near Sunyani in the Bono area.
The identities of the dismembered bodies are said to include that of a 13-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy. They were identified as Loius Agyemang, a relative of the suspect and Stephen Sarpong.
After his arrest, the suspect reportedly explained the motivation behind his heinous act, as he allegedly informed investigators that he started the wave of killings by killing dogs before moving on to murder human beings.
The leaked source Appiah said his act relied on others having some spiritual strength ordered to kill a black dog.
The suspect reportedly confessed to eating the black dog’s head after killing it, with the source saying “there is evidence that he actually killed a black dog before turning to the people he killed” .
“This ‘something’ he claims made him commit heinous crimes, we don’t know. The police do not dwell on the spirits to conduct the investigation.
Appiah states that the order to kill a human came a week after he killed the dog, “he told interrogators that the so-called ‘something’ had prompted him to kill humans again and that’s exactly what he did.
The investigating suspect is said to be suffering from a psychiatric problem because he does not appear to be mentally healthy.
“There is evidence to show Richard Appiah had a psychological problem, saying that some time ago he went to the hospital for a psychiatric examination,” the source said, adding “there was evidence that he had been taken to the hospital If you wish, you can check the hospital here in Sunyani to verify.
He would undergo a psychiatric examination at the mental hospital in Accra at the request of the police.
However, the Daily Guide report seen by GhanaWeb says the source disputed claims circulating around Sunyani that the suspect mentioned politicians, hotel owners and coffee bar operators, both in Sunyani and in Berekum, like his collaborators.
“That’s a lie. You see, when the news broke, it was even mentioned that Richard owed a fleet of cars and mansions. Look, the upstairs building across from the crime scene is for someone. “one who is domiciled abroad and not even in the country. Richard Appiah does not even owe a motorcycle let alone cars,” the source reportedly said.
The source further refutes allegations of police cover-up saying that “the police administration has procedures to fight crime. The IGP, as the leader, decides to do what it thinks is best with the investigation in any part of the country. The transfer was a purely administrative decision to ensure that investigations were carried out expeditiously.
“The IGP or regional commanders can decide where investigations into a case can take place and that doesn’t hide anything from the public.”
The source indicates that with the exception of the genitals of his victims, all parts of the victims’ body were intact based on forensic investigations conducted by pathologists.
The suspect allegedly confessed to flushing his genitals in a toilet.
“This is why the police had to draw water from the septic tanks at the crime scene in order to verify the information he gave during questioning,” the source said.
Louis Agyeman, one of the victims was reportedly buried last week following the delivery of his remains to his family by the police.
George Sarpong’s funeral, on the other hand, was reportedly delayed due to a standoff between his family and the police
The family reportedly initially rejected the body for burial in protest at the slow investigation into the case. Daily Guide reports, however, that the family finally agreed to claim the body for burial this weekend.
State of legal proceedings
Richard Appiah is scheduled to appear in court on October 25, 2021.
During the last court sitting on the case, the police indicated that they were awaiting the results of an autopsy carried out on the mortal remains of the two victims found in the room of the accused.
The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Lawrence Anane, told the court that the police would conclude their investigations once they received the autopsy report, after which a duplicate would be forwarded to the attorney general’s office for opinion.
