Several hectares of reclaimed land from Agbogbloshie in Accra have been allocated for the construction of the Ablekuma Central District Hospital under the government’s Agenda 111 hospital project.
The region was once the largest slum in West Africa and a major health risk area.
This was revealed on Friday after Regional Minister for Greater Accra, the Hon. Henry Quartey led a presidency delegation, led by Dr Nsiah Asare, the president’s health adviser, to assess land assigned to them by the Regional Coordinating Council to build the hospital.
According to the regional minister, the hospital, when completed, will cover the Korle Bu University Hospital and also serve more than 200,000 residents of Ablekuma Central, Ablekuma South, Odododiodioo constituency and its neighboring communities. .
President Nana Akufo-Addo, on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, laid the groundwork for the start of Agenda 111, which he presents as the largest investment ever made in the health sector in Ghana.
The project includes the construction of (101) district hospitals, the construction of seven regional hospitals for the new regions, including a new one for the West region, the construction of two new mental hospitals for the Middle Belt and the Northern Belt , respectively, and the rehabilitation of the Effia-Nkwanta hospital in the West region
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in Trede, Ashanti region, President Akufo-Addo noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the shortcomings of Ghana’s health system as the country has not invested much in this area.
He added that a first (88) of the 101 sites has been identified for the start of construction work on the district hospitals, with the remaining thirteen (13) sites to be completed soon for the start of work.
“Each hospital is being built at a cost of US $ 16.88 million, or US $ 12.88 million for construction and US $ 4 million for medical equipment. All hospitals are to be completed within eighteen (18) months. Work will begin in regional and other hospitals at the end of the year, ”he said.
President Akufo Addo revealed that the fully equipped state-of-the-art hospitals will have facilities for outpatient services, including consultation facilities for medical and surgical cases, ophthalmology and dental services, a physiotherapy unit, a maternal and child health unit, a public health unit, four (4) state-of-the-art operating rooms for maternity, obstetrics and gynecology, accidents and emergencies, as well as for facilities general surgery and imaging.
“In addition, each hospital will have all the services for men, women, pediatrics and isolation. Arrangements have been made for support facilities, which will include a kitchen, laundry room, sterilization department, mortuary, energy center, maintenance department and accommodation for staff of doctors, nurses and others. health workers, ”he said.
