The proposed waste-to-energy plant will be developed according to the Abu Dhabi IPP model, with long-term project agreements encompassing both the purchase of electricity and the supply of waste with EWEC and Tadweer, according to the statement.
The plant will be located near the existing Al Dhafra landfill in Abu Dhabi, will have a planned treatment capacity of between 600,000 and 900,000 tonnes / year of waste. As part of the plan, it will generate enough electricity to power up to 22,500 homes in the UAE, making it one of the largest waste-to-energy facilities in the region, the companies said.
The project supports UAE Vision 2021 to divert 75% of waste from landfills, according to the statement. In addition, the plant is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 1.5 million tonnes / year, equivalent to taking more than 300,000 cars off the road, the companies said.
