AC Milan has provided an official update on the fate of Cristian Zapata after his forced departure from the clash between Serie A and Genoa on Tuesday.

Zapata was defeated in the 14th minute of Milan's 2-0 win over Il Grifone and the Milan club revealed that the defender suffered a muscle injury in his right thigh.

The official statement reads: "AC Milan announces today that Cristian Zapata has undergone an MRI showing a femoral bicep lesion in the right thigh due to the injury that occurred during the match Genoa CFC vs AC Milan . "

Although they were unable to reveal when the 32-year-old would be able to return, they revealed that Zapata would have another medical exam in two weeks.

The Colombian international has been a useful member of the team this season, having played 17 appearances in different competitions. After taking a slow start after returning from injury, he finished 90 minutes in eight of his last nine Serie A matches in Milan.

The Rosseneri won the game against Genoa thanks to goals from Fabio Borini and Suso, but the key discussion point of the match was the forced absence of the attackers of both teams. The local team did not have Krzysztof Piatek before his proposed transfer to visitors, Milan being in turn without Gonzalo Higuain before his own transfer to Chelsea.

Gennaro Gatusso's team is back to the game against Napoli this weekend in the league, before again competing in Carlo Ancelotti's Gli Azzurri in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia. Both matches will be held in San Siro.
