Street corners and road intersections in Ghana’s capital Accra are being improved ahead of Christmas time.
The shoulders and edges of the main streets have been painted, the lawns neatly mown and decorated with Christmas lights, a few days before the celebrations.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) also spotted contemporary artwork and paintings, murals on smooth surfaces, fishing boats and old vehicles placed at vantage points giving the city a attractive appearance.
The GNA understood that the “disguise” is carried out by Jandel Limited in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to make Accra a “city of art”.
Mr. Gilbert Ankrah, WADA Public Relations Officer, said the initiative was part of the Assembly’s vision for Accra to become a city of “art and style”.
“WADA has a vision to make Accra a city of art and creativity where young people can bring out their creativity, so when Jandel Limited brought that vision, we decided it was the right partnership,” did he declare.
Mr Ankrah said the entire beautification project has also been incorporated to make Accra a clean city, adding that they will also clean up the metropolis ahead of the Christmas party.
He said the Assembly is committed to making the Christmas party an exciting and safe one, saying it will soon meet with stakeholders in the metropolis on how to make the 2020 Christmas party a moment memorable.
He said security arrangements have been made to ensure that locals and visitors / tourists go about their business safely and “peacefully before, during and after the celebrations”.
Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in his 20th address to the nation on how to contain the spread of COVID-19, urged citizens to strictly adhere to COVID-19 security protocols during the holiday. .
He advised people to celebrate in open spaces and observe social distancing while wearing face masks to curb the spread of the virus.
