Ghana’s Director General of Health Services Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye has denied claims Achimota School will be closed after a total of 135 students and teachers tested positive for various variants of COVID- 19, including Delta.

Dr Kuma-Aboagye confirmed the presence of the Delta variant at the Achimota school this weekend, but did not disclose the number of cases of the Delta variant, however.

Speaking further at a panel discussion on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokooo,” the GHS boss said Achimota’s cases had been contained on campus and there would be no need to shut down school.

“The Achimota school has so far produced around 135 positive cases and we are still waiting. We have tested 844 people and we have so far had 500 results,” he added.

Delta variant

Ghana reportedly registered the Delta variant of the SARS-Cov-2 virus in a community after it was announced that the variant was detected at Kotoka International Airport.

Six people were reportedly arrested by the authorities for having tested positive.

Detection of the Delta variant in a community across the country was confirmed by the Ghana Health Service on Friday, July 2, 2021 with the announcement made on the Ministry of Information-Ghana’s Facebook wall.

The Delta variant, which originated in India, is known to be the most contagious among all the variants of the coronavirus.
