Nigeria's Allied Congress Party, ACPN, reacted to the withdrawal of its presidential candidate, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, from the February 16 presidential elections.
DAILY POST had reported that Ezekwesili had announced Wednesday in a statement that she had steered clear of the presidential race to help form a coalition aimed at defeating the Progressive Congress and the Democratic People's Party in the election of February 16, 2019.
According to her, her decision to withdraw from the race followed long discussions with Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora and a review of the country's electoral environment following the 2019 presidential debate on Saturday, January 19, 2019.
At a press conference on Thursday, the party responded by accusing Dr. Ezekwesili of using his platform to negotiate a ministerial position in the next political forum, Ezekwesili said he had not consulted them before to to withdraw from the race.
S addressing the press, national party president and vice president of Dr. Ezekwesili, Alhaji Ganiyu Galadima, national secretary, chief Paul Isamede, national vice president of the South, Otunba Bosun Omosule and his northern counterpart, Alhaji Ibrahim Goronyo said he received with dismay without surprise, the withdrawal of Ezekwesili, who was expected to anticipate the decision that the party would have taken after its meeting on Thursday.
The party added that she intended to withdraw her candidacy and give it to someone else.
"She only preempted the decision we would have made today that was to withdraw her candidacy and give it to someone else.
"Our presidential nomination ticket amounts to 10 million nairas and our expression of interest is 500,000 nairas. But when she came, she said she did not have money, but she only had 100,000 and we wanted to encourage women, we gave her our stand, "she said. Mr. Galadima.
"ACPN has declared its support for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC All Congress Congress," he said.
