Ad Astra

Once the dust settles on mega blockbusters this summer, a treat for the beginning of autumn awaits you: a new film from The lost city of Z director James Gray. This one is a sci-fi epic called Ad Astra, including Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones and Liv Tyler – and after some notable delays (the film was originally released in January, then postponed to May and now to September), the first trailer has finally arrived.

This first look may not carry the usual number of gray thumbprints you could imagine, but it uses Brad-Pitt's angle in the space, which is certainly the biggest draw for casual movie lovers. He plays Roy McBride, an astronaut who follows in the footsteps of his father (Jones), who has been missing for years on a mysterious mission. When an incident called "The Surge" causes all kinds of power outages and communication problems, Pitt retreats to the cosmos to understand exactly what happened to his father.

There are some Interstellar the vibrations here – especially with these father problems, the black-and-white cosmos, and Hoyte Van Hoytema on the cinematograph homework. And while some plans tease action and epic journeys into space, expect it to be a cerebral and emotionally inspired science fiction adventure. Ad Astra arrives in British cinemas on September 20th.
