Addo-Yobo Calls for More Investment in Disaster Risk Reduction Efforts

Accra, April 2007, GNA – Dr. Felix Addo-Yobo,
Acting Director of Policy Planning for National Development Planning
Commission (NDPC) called on the government and stakeholders to engage more
resources to support disaster risk reduction (DRR) initiatives in the country.

He said that an adequate investment in DRR would go to
long road to drastically reduce the damage caused by
infrastructure and services.

He noted that strengthening the community
resilience and disaster risk reduction are essential elements in the promotion of
sustainable development of the nation.

Dr. Addo-Yobo launched the appeal in his presentation
at a stakeholder meeting on "Disaster Risk Reduction in Ghana:
our cities ", in Accra.

DRR is a systematic approach to
identify, badess and reduce disaster risk.

It aims to reduce the damage caused by
natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, droughts and cyclones
ethics of prevention.

The two-day meeting was organized by the NDPC
in collaboration with the Cities and Climate Change Steering Committee
Regional Institute of Population Studies, University of Ghana and National Institute
Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).

Dr. Addo-Yobo said that disasters were real problems
in Ghana, and it was necessary to take into account disaster risk reduction
seriously; citing the recent floods of some cities and towns and the high
spat of fatal accidents on the roads of the country.

Speaking on "Disaster Risk Reduction"
in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the
National Volunteer (VNR), "said Dr. Addo-Yobo, in the Program of Work for 2030
Sustainable Development has recognized and reaffirmed the urgent need to reduce
risk of disasters.

"In addition to direct references to
the results of the Third United Nations Conference on DRR (Sendai Framework),
there are specific opportunities to achieve the SDGs by reducing disasters
risk, "he said.

He stated that the objectives of the Sendai Framework and
indicators contributing to measuring the 2030 Agenda objectives related to disasters
for sustainable development.

He said that SDG 11 sought to make cities and citizens more humane.
inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable institutions, while the SDO 13
urged to take urgent measures to combat climate change and its impacts.

With regard to the National Voluntary Goals
Opinion (VNR), Dr Addo-Yobo said that 51 countries, including Ghana, would present
NRVs report to the 2019 High Level Panel Forum in New York from 9 to 18 July;
adding that this would be followed by the first head of government
review of the SDGs in September.

The monitoring and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development aims to
promote the sharing of experiences (successes, challenges and lessons learned) and
monitor progress in implementing goals and targets.
