The announcement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs that the government plans to adopt French as a second language has ruffled some feathers.
Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey reiterated the government's plans to include the promotion of the French language in primary schools and all other levels of education and described this practice as a general reform in Ghana's education sector.
Many Ghanaians are not particularly amused by the revelation that the decision, announced during the Francophone Week in Accra in 2019, is in line with national priorities.
Okyeame Kwame, an artist at Hiplife, who is part of a list of personalities who do not support the adoption of French as a second language, said that decision was disrespectful.
The tourism ambbadador believes that the adoption of French as a second Ghanaian language will hinder the development of the nation.
In a series of tweets, in which he also took his time to respond to his fans who also shared their views on the issue, Okyeame Kwame expressed his strong objection against the government's plan.
"French as a second language is disrespectful to our pride and culture. It is bad enough that our first language is the language of another person. What's wrong with making one of our local languages our mother tongue? @ Hitz1039FM, "he said.
The musician, who is currently actively promoting his "Made in Ghana" album, a composition of songs that sells Ghana's cultural diversities, language, fashion and cuisine, said that "every country in the developing world teaches , works and interacts in his language.
"We can encourage ourselves to learn more foreign languages such as Chinese, Spanish and French. My problem is to make this language a second language when local languages are dying, "said Okyeame Kwame.
"English is our native language oooooo. Hausa, Ewe, Akan and even Krio are everywhere around us, but we are choosing English too quickly because we will fight to choose the language to use, "he said, adding," I know this It's not easy, but we have to try to make our languages relevant and export them with our culture. Okyeame Kwame told Andy Dosty in an interview with Daybreak Hitz with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM that "when I sleep and I dream one day, I speak in my dream, I speak twi".
"When you talk to me in twi, the amount of knowledge I reserve because the language is not a word that comes out of your mouth, it's the combination of a shared story and the 39, a shared culture.
