Burundi has qualified for the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in its history on Saturday with a 1-1 draw at home against Gabon, eliminated.
Cedric Amissi scored in the 76th minute. Burundi, which needed only a draw to qualify, seemed to have sealed its place in Egypt 2019.
A goal against Omar Ngando eight minutes from the end made the match difficult as Gabon were looking for victory.
Despite the return of Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon failed to defeat Burundi, who sealed the qualification in front of his supporters on a famous day at Bujumbura.
The result means that Burundi finished second in Group C, behind the Malian group, already qualified, with Gabon, host of the 2017 Nations Cup, third.
Burundi – ranked 138th in the FIFA rankings – will join its counterparts from East Africa, Uganda and Kenya in the final phase in 2019 in Egypt.
