Professor Anthony Nyong, director of the African Development Bank for climate change and green growth, has been named as one of the 100 most influential figures in climate policy 2019.
The nomination was proposed by Apolitical, a government-to-government learning platform.
A press release issued by the bank's communications officer, Chawki Chahed, said Nyong was among the top 20 on the prestigious list announced Wednesday in London.

The list has been compiled from hundreds of nominations submitted by governments, international organizations and universities, including UNDP, Harvard, Oxford, Bloomberg and the Climate Action Network.
Announcing the nominations, Apolitical Executive President Lisa Witter called for the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with immediate effect.

Context
Mr. Nyong, a pioneering and globally recognized climate change expert, joined the bank in 2008 and has developed his climate change initiatives, including his green growth program.
Prior to joining the Bank, he worked as Senior Climate Change Program Specialist at the International Development Research Center in Nairobi.
As such, Nyong has been able to mobilize substantial resources to implement the Africa Climate Change Adaptation Program, which has significantly enhanced adaptation capacity on the continent.
Previously, he was one of the lead authors of the Fourth Assessment Panel of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and was co-recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. for his contributions. Mr. Nyong has also been a professor of climate change at the University of Jos, Nigeria.
