KABUL, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) – The Afghan Ministry of Public Health has launched a polio vaccination campaign to vaccinate 5.4 million children under the age of five in high-risk districts. Monday the ministry.
"Starting Monday, polio vaccination teams will visit 5.4 million children under five years old in 179 high-risk districts in Afghanistan.The campaign will be launched from 21 to 25 January in west, central and southeast, and 28 to 1 February in the southern and eastern regions, "said the ministry in a statement.
The statement adds that "polio is a disabling and potentially life-threatening infectious disease, there is no cure for polio and polio vaccine is the only safe and effective way to protect children".
The insurgency and ongoing conflicts hinder efforts to eradicate infectious disease in this mountainous country, with more than 20 polio cases detected in Afghanistan in 2018.
