A total of 4.4 million doses of 400 million Johnson & Johnson vaccines have been delivered to 26 Member States.
It was provided by the African Union (AU), the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) in collaboration with the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT).
Africa CDC director Dr John Nkengasong, in a statement made available to Ghana’s news agency in Tema on Thursday, said the vaccines had been purchased by the Africa CDC.
“A total of 12,000 doses have also been delivered to the African Union Commission to immunize its staff members and African Union ambassadors.
Dr Nkengasong noted that the Africa CDC and its partners are on the verge of going further to meet their goal of vaccinating at least 60% of the population, as they continue to lead the fight against the COVID-pandemic. 19 on the African continent.
He said that through AVAT, several African countries continued to receive vaccines from around the world, as the fight against the pandemic continued.
Dr Nkengasong commended India and other countries for their efforts in the fight against Covid-19; “As you may have heard, the Indian government will release and export vaccines in October.
“We welcome the good news as it will help us reach our goal of vaccinating at least 60% of Africa’s population by the end of next year. “
He added that “more donations continue to arrive on the continent. Norway has donated approximately 400,000 AstraZeneca vaccines to Uganda, 124,000 to Zambia, bringing Norway’s total donation to 726,000.
“Germany has also donated more than eight million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine.”
