A place remains to be filled for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon after Benin refused to play their decisive qualifier in Sierra Leone on Tuesday when local officials said at least five of their players had tested positive for Covid-19.
At first, Beninese players would not leave the team bus after being informed that players who tested positive were not eligible for the crucial Group L match in Freetown where Sierra Leone were to win while that Benin only needed a draw for a place in the final next January.
The Beninese federation called the situation “a shame for African football” and declared it was a “tense situation”.
There was no immediate response from the African Football Confederation.
Talks between officials from Sierra Leone, Benin and the African Football Confederation (Caf) in Freetown failed to resolve the stalemate as the two teams remained in their hotels.
