The World Health Organization (WHO) has briefed the world on the measles epidemic in Madagascar as part of some important news on infectious diseases in Africa.
To date, authorities have reported 66,000 cases since the beginning of the epidemic last September. In addition, at least 922 measles-related deaths have been reported in children and young adults.

In the Republic of Congo, an outbreak statement was published in the Kouilou and Pool areas, with at least 1043 validated cases.
Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes that is transmitted from human to human through the bites of infected female mosquitoes.
According to the WHO, chikungunya is characterized by the sudden onset of a fever often accompanied by joint pain. Muscular pains, headaches, nausea, fatigue and rashes are other common signs and symptoms. Joint pain is often very debilitating, but usually ends in a few days or weeks. Most patients recover completely, but in some cases joint pain can persist for months to years. Occasional cases of ocular, neurological and cardiac complications have been reported, as well as gastrointestinal disorders.
