A senior World Health Organization (WHO) official urged African governments not to lose faith in the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine after several European countries suspended use of the vaccine.
Dr Richard Mihigo – the WHO Africa Vaccination Officer – said the product has so far been shown to be safe.
Previously, the European Medicines Agency – which is investigating a small number of reports of blood clots after inoculation – reaffirmed its belief that the benefits of the vaccine outweighed the risks.
African countries rely on the AstraZeneca vaccine because it is cheaper and easier to store than other vaccines.
Many have already received doses as part of the Covax global sharing initiative.
