Madam Judge Imani D Aboud, President of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, commended the efforts of predecessor Judge Sylvain Oré, under whose mandate the African Court has achieved the most remarkable achievements.
“It is indeed under the leadership of President Oré that the African Court has reached its highest productivity, obviously negotiating significant increases both in the length of sessions and in the financial resources allocated by the African Union.
“The human resource capacity of the African Court has also increased with special attention given to legal staff who implement the main activities of the institution in addition to improving the working conditions of judges,” said the judge. Aboud at a farewell ceremony held over the weekend in Arusha, Tanzania.
“Judge Oré has devoted an exceptional commitment to seeing the African Court face some of its greatest challenges, which have manifested themselves during his two terms in complex cooperation with States.
“Faced with the wave of withdrawals of States from the African Court, it is only fair to congratulate President Oré and his team for having earned the institution more ratifications and more declarations thanks to the incessant visibility work deployed over the past four years, ”said the President of the African Court.
Madam Justice Aboud noted that the visibility of the African Court was indeed at the heart of Judge Oré’s presidency, as evidenced by achievements such as a wider network of human rights media, a larger pool well-trained lawyers registered with the African Court.
“Justice Ore has embraced an innovative legal reporting system, as well as an emerging and state-of-the-art digitization of case handling processes,” she noted.
Other achievements also include improving the operational efficiency of the African Court Registry; the establishment of more staff as well as courageous administrative decisions, which led the registry to implement a results-oriented approach to support the work of judges as a work force of the institution.
“President Oré whom we know is also the one with the human face; characterized by an obsession with inclusiveness as well as a constant openness to entertain the difference of opinions.
“He was also very inclined to reconcile divergent points of view, whether in the development of legal opinions or simply in administrative management. Such qualities cannot be taken for granted, which is why we are here to celebrate his legacy at the African Court, ”said Judge Aboud.
The farewell ceremony took place in the presence of Judge Blaise Tchikaya, Vice-President of the Court; judges of the Court; the Registrar and the Deputy Registrar; Senior officers and staff of the Registry, representative of the African Union and other eminent jurists from Arusha, Tanzania.
A plaque with the image of Judge Ore in relief was presented to him in recognition of the valuable service rendered to African human rights jurisprudence and to the architecture of the African Union.
In short, Judge Ore congratulated the current leadership of the African Court for the honor of recognizing his service as President of the Court of the African Continent.
